Better Book Moving – Literally

Colourful home facades

Four tips how moving your large book selection can be a satisfying process.

If you’re a dedicated bookworm with an impressive literary library, you’ll be aware of the heavy loads ahead when it comes time to move. However, with a few tips, moving your books doesn’t have to be such a big deal and, in fact, it can be a very satisfying process.

Cull, Cull, Cull

There’s nothing like a shelf cleanout and what better time to take care of it than before a move. The last thing you want to be doing is lugging loads of unwanted books across town, up and down stairs. Begin the process a couple of months in advance and be ruthless. If a book has been lingering on the shelf for a long time, take it to your local book swap or charity store or offer them to friends and family. You could even sell them online.

Only Small Boxes

This sounds obvious but it’s super important so make sure you get on board. Books are heavy: don’t pack them in large boxes because somebody has to lift them. Back breaking bulked up boxes of books are a recipe for a moving mishap that could end up with a visit to your physio or chiro. If you only have large boxes then check out our next tip.

Outside The Box

Boxes aren’t the only vessel capable of carrying lots of books. Another perfect way to cart them down to the truck is in canvas shopping bags. These make the best book bags – they’re tough and they have thick, comfort handles.

Prudent Packing

If you pack your books carefully and strategically, there’ll be less sorting out at the other end. Assuming you’ve sorted for books following your culling session, pack them in the same way you want them ordered on your shelves. For example, you may order them by title, genre or author. Pack your books spine-down so as not to damage them and label your boxes clearly.

With these simple tips, you’ll have more time to sit back, relax and get reading in your new home with your freshly organised library.
